Uncle Nearest

Has anyone heard of this bourbon? It suppose to be pretty good. It has won quite a few awards, 95 points in the Ultimate Whiskey Challenge and a few others JUst curious if anyone has tried it.

How reliable do you think that the awards are? are they paid reviewers to give out awards based on bribes, or is it a genuine group of professionals or enthusiasts?

There was a whiskey, a bourbon, several years ago that made me nearly die laughing. It was highly rated and had great reviews.

BUT.

It had no age statement. It wasn't whole corn mash. In fact, the thing shouldn't have been legally called bourbon, I thought, because it was only a percentage of actual, barrel aged bourbon that had been stepped on pretty hard with NEUTRAL GRAIN SPIRITS.

Yep, that's right. It was still a mostly 'corn' based liquor. it was distilled. but the actual spirits had none of the 'bourbon' qualities, nothing that could be aged and turned into 'whiskey'. WHAT THEY DID WAS TO CREATE A (PROBABLY) REALLY CRAPPY BOURBON, MIX IN GASOHOL, AND SELL IT RIGHT OUT OF THE BARREL A YEAR LATER.

It got good reviews.

I've had a few that would have passed as NASCAR fuel.

I'm throwing the bullshit flag. I can't find much that says that it's good. The 'ultimate whiskey challenge' also gave $11 a bottle early times a 94. The challenge is a paid promotional device, people who get 85 or over are allowed to use the name in publicity. They can also buy promo materials from an affiliate. They will spam internet accounts with the news.

It's obviously a bargain at an entry fee of only $525.00.

Never, ever trust any of the awards. sometimes you can trust reviewers and friends, but if you take an 'award' at face value you just gave a scam artist exactly what they wanted.

The problem with "reviews" is the reviewer -- when it comes to whiskey, food, movies and women, let yourself be the judge -- this applies particularly to cigars.

I see its a TN whiskey, and one version is $120 a bottle (Uncle Nearest 1820 Single Barrel)

the 1856 version goes upper $60 range

Reviews I find are 3.5 to 4 of 5 stars

I have not tried it
