Asian Jazz group?

One of my seniors came to me the other day asking about something he heard on WWOZ 90.7 in New Orleans afternoon show called Jazz From the Park.

It was an Asian group, and they have a whole album with nothing but Thelonius Monk compositions on it. He called the DJ, but the guy had put the album/disc away and didn't remember what it was.

Do any of you have an idea who or what this is? Brad would be thankful.

The first that comes to mind is Toshiko Akiyoshi. She has been very prolific over the last 40 years or so. I took a glance through a discography and didn't see anything directly dedicated to Monk, though.

This may help you a bit.

Go here: http://www.wwoz.org/schedule.html#schedule

From 4:00 to 7:00 is the show called "Jazz From The Park". You may be able to narrow it down further from there. I looked at a few playlists, and nothing jumped out at me.

Great playlists, though. A shame we don't have a station like that in my neck of the woods.

Brad called the guy, but they guy had already put the album away and didn't remember.

I'll tell him to check the playlist, though. It's been over a week now, I think.

He doesn't remember the day, and is going to try and talk to the DJ again.
Top.
