Pyrat Rum "Pistol"

Thought I'd try my hand at alcohol reviewing

Pyrat Rum "Pistol"

Origin: Road Bay, Anguilla, British West Indies
Appearance: Red-tinged butterscotch, gold sunset sky.
Aroma: Very concentrated English toffee and clover honey drizzled over orange and grapefruit peels. Alcohol scent was very subdued, even sniffing from a snifter.
Flavor: Very reflective of the aroma. Combined the sweetness of toffee and honey with the tartness and bitter edge of citrus peels. Drier than most rums, with a strong grapefruit finish with slight woodiness. Very soft and drinkable with a nice bite to it.
Summary: People have said this is a flavored rum, and by the aroma and taste, I thought the same. But searching the internet for information on this rum revealed absolutely NOTHING saying it's flavored! Very surprizing how strong this rum is with citrus flavors without any flavoring. A true testament to how multi-varied alcohol can be. It's not for everybody, since some might not enjoy such a strong citrus taste in their rum, but I find it enjoyable for an aperitif.

Let me know what you think...can I cut it as an alcohol reviewer?

Thanks for the review! I bought some Pyrat XO last week, but haven't tried it yet. So much alcohol, so little time

I tried this a few weeks ago and didn't like it at all. By it self or as a mixer

You will find the citrus flavor is from the oranges they make it with.

It sounds like it's true...but no description I've read on any website selling Pyrat Pistol says anything about it being flavored with or made from oranges. They claim its just a different blend from the Gold and called "Pistol" because of the old-timey thin bottle design. You think they'd tell you this kinda sh*t when you're about to buy it, since it doesn't seem possible for a rum to have so much citrus peel flavor and NOT have something in it besides sugarcane.

I find it very similar to the XO. Pyrat rum is different and I find it an interesting change of pace not offensive to me, just different. I would not put this in the category of flavored rums like mango, pineapple, or coconut rum. Those are really fruity and the orange/spice flavors in the Pyrat are subtle but still feel that it should be labled as spiced or flavored. I ended up buying a half dozen bottles when it was on sale for $7.99. I find the flavors mix well with cigars.

Gotta disagree here. Pyrat is not spiced or flavored. It is how good, aged rum tastes. I don't think the same people that are going to buy Capt Morgan or those flavored rums are going to spend the $$$ for Pyrat.

Are you suggesting that there is nothing other than molasses in Pyrat? If so then is it aged in flavored casks? Hey I like the stuff and have sampled many premium aged rums and nothing has a taste like the Pyrat rums. Most premium rum is aged in bourbon barrels. Anyone know how Pyrat is aged?

I'm not sure where you've been shopping lately, but since last Christmas, the prices for Pyrat at my local BevMo and at many online shops have actually been cheaper than Capt Morgan.
