Jimmy Martin Re-Joins Bill Monroe

Another one of the great first generation Bluegrass performers checks out. For those of who love bluegrass music Martin was one of the giants.

Well, time marches on. Fortunately for us we have archival records of their wonderful music. We just can't thank them for it any more.

I too am saddened by his passing. Besides having fewer and fewer of the bluegrass legends around, it seems like as time passes there are less and less people who appreciate the old bluegrass and country music. I'm not sure I know anyone else my age who could even tell you who Bill Monroe was...

It is harder and harder to find young people who really like this music. It is definitely sad. Fortunately evevry few years the genre seems to get a boost from a movie or a country star who does a bluegrass album and a few hardcore new devotees will go back and get some of the stuff made by the legends. The same happens for blues and jazz as well.

Here in Nashville we can still hear some great live bluegrass played somewhere just about every night.

I think Allison Krauss has done a wonderful job in trying to keep the light burning.

"Our darling wandered far away
While she was out at play
Lost in the woods she couldn't hear a sound
She was our darling girl
The sweetest thing in the world
We searched for her but she couldn't be found

I heard the screams of our little girl far away
Hurry daddy there's an awful dreadful snake
I ran as fast as I could though the dark and dreary woods
But I reached our darling girl too late

Oh, I began to sigh, I knew that soon she'd have to die
For the snake was warning me close by
I held her close to my face she said Daddy kill that snake
It's getting dark tell Mommy goodbye

I heard the screams of our little girl far away
Hurry daddy there's an awful dreadful snake
I ran as fast as I could though the dark and dreary woods
But I reached our darling girl too late"

G'night Jimmy, Godspeed...
