Short version:
Lager - bottom fermenting yeast, at cold temps, and a long cold conditioning phase.

Ale - top fermenting yeast, at or near room temps (55-70 degrees), and a somewhat shorter conditioning phase, also at room temp.

Porter and stout are both ales.
Stout or stout porter is an evolution of porter depending upon which storyline you believe.

YMMV

Taste? My perceptions are that:

Lager is a little bit more bitter, with a woody type of taste. Ale seems lighter and sweeter. Neither of them taste like beer, as sold in cans.

Porter and stout are both made with roasted malts. the malts are cooked until scorching before grinding and mashing to release caramelized sugars.

Probably not a lot of help.

Lager and Ale denote "fermentation style", where as Porter and Stout are 2 different types of DARK Ales.

A porter will tend to have a less 'burnt', more toasted flavor, and more 'body' due to proteins and unconverted sugars than a stout. A stout will typically have a slightly higher alcohol content, more hop bitterness, and from the use of black malt that more 'burnt' dark flavor and color.

A Pilsner is a lager.
