Carlos Toraño 'Casa Toraño' Maduro Lancero
Casa Toraño Maduro Lancero
Dimensions: 7 inches by 38-ring gauge. Cap: Classic pigtail. Wrapper: Oscuro. Blackish toned burnt umber to sepia hue with scattered cocoa brown areas more prevalent near the head. Filler leaves: Straw coloured through Van Dyke brown to burnt umber. Quite dark. Roll density: Firm. Combustion characteristics: Some uneveness of the burn line early on, but this corrected itself in short order. Otherwise, the draw and combustion were excellent. Duration: A little over 1 hour. Accompanying beverages: Dalmore Cigar Malt and filtered water on the side. Pre-light aroma: Sweet tobacco. Barnyard. Caramel. Apple wood. Post-light characteristics: Overture: Bittersweet and slightly charred at the outset. Early stages: Soya sauce. Wild mushrooms. Expresso. Weathered cedar overtones. A very broadly conveyed yet unobtrusive earthy component. Mid-portion: Dark Madagascar chocolate. Maple sap. More dark roasted coffee notes. A hint of blackberries and ground pepper, the latter rather subdued. Late stages: Good sweet-dry balance with the core tobacco taste reasserting itself amidst the secondary flavour elements. Strength: Definitely in the medium range despite the 'dark' tonality of the flavour presentation. Positive impressions: A pleasurable cigar. The Nicaraguan tobacco aspect appeared to permeate most of the smoke, and melded in a sufficiently satisfactory manner with the additional sweetness of the Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed Maduro wrapper leaf. The degree of complexity was also quite noteworthy. Negative impressions: Overall, there seemed to be very little dynamic progression through the session. And despite the aforementioned complexity and wealth of flavours, I sensed an overall dullness that compromised the clarity of the various elements. Perhaps the next sample will improve on this performance?
