You can use solid spanish cedar if you choose. It works extremely well, takes detail very well, and takes finish very well. You can also get some stunning figure out of it. Will it take a beating like oak, ash, or maple? No, but I would hope you aren't going to play soccer with your humidor.

Things to consider for veneers vs. solid wood. If you scratch a veneer, chip it, etc. they isn't a whole lot you can do about it until you are one of those refinishing/restoration wizards. With a solid wood, you can strip the finish off, clean up the blemish, and refinish it pretty easily.
