Altria sucks
If you haven't heard, Altria sent a letter to the FDA asking them NOT to exempt premium cigars from upcoming legislation. Below is a list of Altria owned companies.
At-A-Glance Philip Morris USA U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. John Middleton Nat Sherman Nu Mark Ste. Michelle Wine Estates Philip Morris Capital Corp. I only purchase one of these brands, but will not anymore. Several retailers I know have already stopped ordering from them.

It's been a good stock for the last 20 years.

Michael Herklot is trying to put a good spin on this on Facebook. Saying Altria was misunderstood in essence. No matter how much lipstick you put on a pig, it is still a pig.

Carlito Fuente posted about this on Facebook, as well.
He is of the opinion that the company blew smoke up Michael Herklots' back-side. Shame, too, he's a good guy, loves his work. It leaves Michael in a poor position. I know he'd get hired, but to have to make that choice at the drop of a hat....

Jeff, the city draws a 2% tax. My concern is that at some point, every little place that sells a bible online from a an Ebay bible will have to collect the twenty cents for that bible and remit it to joplin.
A person who is willing to spend ten bucks or so on shipping isn't going to concern himself with 2% tax, so it's not going to divert a whole lot of money back. I'm not arguing about big places, amazon can do just that. set up accounts for every zip code available and then break that down to exactly what zip plus4 has to pay, and they can do that. It doesn't make any difference to me, actually, if they start getting their due, and it will be an aid to the tax base. My greatest objection is the small businesses who will be remitting a hundred dollars or so every month, maybe. The other great objection is the same old thing "It's not fair that we lose taxes and the local businesses lose millions of dollars when people buy things online because they don't pay tax." This won't bring revenue back to the merchants. It will bring money to the city. My gripe is the same old song; "It's not fair!" Let the state collect. Maybe they can arrange a county based tax, not a house by house tax based on shipping address. I'm just feeling bitchy. I was actually going to vote for it, because it's not going to hurt anyone but the crazy people who are trying to run a little business. |
