Can you "overlight" a cigar?

OK, so here's the deal: I don't have any luck with torch lighters! I have a pretty good basic Vector torch, but it seems like every cigar I smoke from it SUCKS! Everything up to the CoRo I just blew with it. Symptoms include poor taste, not much smoke, almost like the cigar is not lit enough, except the end is most definitely completely and utterly lit. I light by holding the lighter above the flame until it's completely ignited, which is the same way I usually use my regular lighters. It's happened with such a disperate selection of cigars that I know it just can't be coincedence.

Is it possible that I am messing something up here with my lighter/technique that would cause what I'm experiencing? I've never had this problem with anything but my two torches, and mostly with my industrial-style torch.
