Wettable florist foam is what you need. It is sold in "bricks" (green in color) and can be found at most craft shops (look for the Oasis brand if you can). Otherwise, it is available in generic form at places like WalMart and K-Mart. Intitial filling should be a 50/50 solution of distilled water and propylene glycol (PG). The latter is an excellent mold retardent and humidity regulator. You can find it pre-mixed in plastic bottles in most cigar shops. Griffo brand is just one. Subsequent refillings should be with distilled water only. Thoroughly moisten the foam with the mixture but do not over-saturate.
A block of new florist foam should cost you no more than a dollar to a dollar and a half. Overall, it is the most efficient, least expensive humidifying media you can buy. It is also relatively lower maintenance (requires less watching over/re-hydrating) than silica gel and other forms of humidifying media. For the beginner in particular, I feel it's the best option. Later on, you can always experiment with other stuff. While you're at it, invest in a good digital hygrometer.
