XM Radio

I won a boom box XM Radio through my work. It came with 6 months of free service.

First impressions....wow

The quality of reception is excellent. The overall variety of music, sports, news and all is also very very good.

Have any of you listened to XM?

Haven't done it yet although I have been tempted to have it installed in my truck. I do believe though that it would be great.

My only hold back is that I love my own music selection. The bonus would be that you get to hear more new music.

Haven't heard it. But of all the people I know who have gotten it, none have said they'd get rid of it.

Had a rental car for a business trip that had Sirius radio. Sucked big time, in my opinion.

One major drawback to satellite radio is lack of variety. By this I mean, you are tuned in to a sub-sub-sub genre. It's not just blues, it's delta blues. Or Chicago blues, or jump blues, or whatever.

On satellite radio you won't see the independant stations that give you the variety. They don't play the corporate game, and satellite radio is, after all, corporate radio.

Give me a station that will play everything from Steely Dan to Ben Folds; From Billy Holiday to George Winston. From BR-549 to Lucinda; From The Animals to The Eels. You don't find this on satellite radio.

Just my opinion...

The problem is you won't find that much of anywhere anymore....I live in a VERY radio deprived area....clear channel owns 3 of the big 5 or 6....so selection is pathetic.

I have thought about XM bu my office sits way back from any walls and I am afraid I would not get signal....how picky is it? I really need to find someone who has one and see if I can use it in my office.....

with my "boom box" the radio antennae has about a 20' lead. The ant itself needs to be directed to the southern sky. I wont be able to use this in my home, but for out in the back yard its ok.

I plan on getting Sirius soon. It has more sports (NFL, NHL, NBA). XM has more subscribers and NASCAR. Congrats on your win!!!

I thought this was supposed to be one of the advantages of satellite radio?

For example, if I want to listen to real jazz, I don't have to suffer through 45 minutes of Kenny G., just to get one Miles Davis song or one Louis Armstrong number.

If I want variety, I don't need satellite radio.

Am I missing something in my reasoning?

I know that there are a couple of jazz stations I like. One is called Franks place, Sinatra type music, the other is jazz/blues with alot of Miles Davis etc...there are about 10 different Jazz selections. About 150 stations in all

I don't know how I lived without XM. I believe that they purchased Sirrius, too. I got 3 sports talks stations I can listen to 24/7, plus every subculture of music imaginable. I really like it.
