Properly bleeding a lighter before refilling???

I recently had a lighter that wasn't work for me, I bled the lighter and refilled it a couple times (yes of course it's good butane-colibri) and it still wouldn't work. So I took to to the local cigar store and the guy looked to do the exact same thing I did, but now it works!! He said most lighters are improperly bled before filling. I thought I was doing this right, is there some small thing, I'm missing, holding a certain way or something else. I've had a couple other lighters and have never had a problem... what's up?
