Humidification Beads
For those using the beads...how do you calculate the quantity (oz/lbs) of beads to use? By the number of cigars in the cooler-dor or by the volume of the cooler-dor? I see issues with both methods. Not interested in replies that say "just keep adding beads until the rh is where you want it".
Also, which brand do you use? Regards, Pegleg

The standard rule I've read is 1 lb. = 5 cubic feet of humidor/cooler space. I have beads from Climmax (out of business) and Heartfelt (Viper) and they both work great. 65% is my particular preference and the cigars have smoked well with that humidity level.
I use 1 lb. of 65% in my 120 qt. cooler with excellent results. Part of the fun with this hobby is the learning that comes from experimentation. You'll most likely get a variety of answers that may all be correct as well. Error on the side of having too many beads for the size humidor you're humidifying since having too many won't cause any problems. Do a search on "beads" and email Viper and he'll get you set up. Good luck. |

I have 1lb. of Heartfelt (Viper's) beads in my 4.5 ft^3 fridgeador, and am flabbergasted at the ease of maintenance- or rather the lack thereof. I glance at my temp/hygro readings every day but haven't added any water in weeks.
The RH stays dead-on 65%, although it's easy to keep it a little higher than that if you wish. 1lb. is definately a good number for 5ft^3.

Check out Heartfelt's website. It has a bead calculation formula.

Heartfelt beads here. I used the information on Viper's website. Shoot him a PM, I'm sure he'll reply to you. Don't be surprised if he posts something for you here either, he's exceptional with customer service |

What are the advatages of the beads over oasis foam and 50:50 dis. water and PG? PG and water are pretty darned cheap and have been working well for years for me.

beads are foolproof and work perfectly all the time no matter what, let you monitor the humidity of your humidor visually (i.e. since you know that the beads will maintain a consistent level, you only need to add water when they begin to dry out), and aren't ever messy or moldy or anything like that.
