Need Advice on Purchasing a Pipe

I would like to get a second pipe and there are two that I am considering. One of them is an eagle claw Meerschaum, the other is a Sabbiato sandblasted pipe.

Are these decent pipes in your opinion? How about the prices, are they reasonable for the product? Being that I have only smoked a pipe for about six months or so and that this will be my second pipe, I don't know which one to get.

I have read that Meerschaums are a lot of work to properly care for. But they look really neat I think. I might end up getting them both, but if I had to get just one, which do you think I should get? Thanks for your input

Dude, the meerschaum WO/eagle claw look pretty good. I think the price can be beat. Maybe another BOTL could provide some sites to view. The Meerschaum provides a great smoke in that it adds nothing to the bacci and will not get contaminated by bad bacci. JMHO..samiam2

Avoid Thompsons if at all possible

I would not trust Thompsons - stick with vendors that specialize in pipes:

For meerschaum pipes ... http://www.meerschaum.com/

For briar pipes ...

http://www.thebriary.com
http://www.cupojoes.com
http://www.iwanries.net
http://www.affordablepipes.com
http://www.pipesandcigars.com
http://www.premierpipes.com

Lots of choice out there.

I thought I read somewhere that the "Meers" from Thompson's were actually plastic and not meant to be smoked at all, merely display pieces.

Thanks for the links and advice. I will certainly avoid Thompson's.

One more question: does the size refer to bowl diameter?

"Size" could mean anything. You should ask for specific measurements before purchasing.
