Yemen Mokha - Bani Mattari
I added some of this to my most recent Sweet Maria's order based on the description on the web site. I'm very familiar with the Ismaili (Hirazi) that SM's routinely carries, and wanted to try something a little different. I roasted it just to the start of second crack last night and brewed it in my Bodum press this morning, enjoying it with a '99 Punch Petite Corona del Punch.
Yemenis are intense coffees - extremely floral and spicy, somehow managing to have both abundant brightness and deep body at the same time. The Bani Mattari has, to my tastes, a bit deeper body than the Ismaili, and a bit more earthiness underlying the typical rose/cardamom flavors of Yemeni coffees. The brightness was there, but not at all out of balance. All in all, it is an interesting and rewarding coffee. My next test will be blending this with some of the new crop Java Blawan I got along with it, to see how it fares in a classic coffee combination. If you're a fan of Yemeni coffees, I would definitely recommend that you give this one a whirl. MD
