I am mulling over learning to play the banjo. How much can I expect to pay for a beginner model, and where should I buy such a thing.

I have not made up my mind yet. I want make sure it is something that I will follow through with before I do anything rash.

Thanks,

BILL

Look on e-bay to see what's available. Even if you end up with a p.o.s., you should be able to use it to determine whether or not you really want to learn.

I always use 100 bucks as a gauge for beginners to play a guitar. In my experience
you need to buy something really expensive that you can resale easy or you buy something that won't hurt if you never leanrn to play it. Pawn shops are awlays good but you gotta have somebody who can play with it to know if the thing is playable. JMVHO

The best inexpensive banjo is probably the Deering "Goodtime 2" for bluegrass or the "Goodtime" for old time music. While there are probably lots of beginner guitars around for $100 I doubt you'll find a playable banjo for that price.

Check the website for sound samples at:
http://www.deeringbanjos.com/

Also, look in on news:alt.banjo for some good info.
