I'm reticent to say this, much as I love Lagavulin, but the most recent bottle of the 16 year old I purchased isn't quite up to the lofty standard I expect from this distillery. Still a tremendously characterful whisky, to be sure. Yet the snap and surge of Islay peat seems a tad muted in comparison to previous bottles. A temporary blip in the radar screen of this renowned site? I surely hope so.
