Interesting thread on this in accessories forum over at CF.

Best to spray water on instead of pouring.

According to Roy Seeman of Climmax, when the beads absorb water too quickly, there is an exothermic reaction which causes the beads to shatter. They will still work fine.

Roy suggests adding water indirectly by placing a container of water for the beads to absorb water over time. Or spray water over the beads.
