Hi fellas. Just randomly found my old Hardcastle pipe in a moving box. I cleaned it up, and think it’s decent enough to cement my foray into pipe smoking…That being said, I don’t have a clue where to begin with purchasing some decent tobacco.
Do y’all have any recommendations on a good tobacco to start with?
Thanks!

What have you smoked before that you liked? Let’s start there.

It was so many years ago that I am unable to recall anything that I previously smoked. It kinda sucks. I’ve done a little bit of looking online… pipes, pipe tobacco…blends…types of tobacco… Its mind boggling. I think I am just needing to find a tobacco to begin the journey.

Here’s a link I find helpful that talks about the different types of tobaccos and their natural flavor characteristics.

https://www.smokingpipes.com/smoking...&utm_medium=SM

There’s basically 2 broad types of pipe tobacco, flavored and non-flavored. Flavors tobaccos have additives called casings or toppings. They generally add flavors like cherry, apple, vanilla, whiskey, etc to the tobacco. Non-flavored is straight tobacco with no flavor casings or toppings added.

Here’s 3 at the top of my head you might consider that I really enjoy.

PETER STOKKEBYE: BALKAN SUPREME - really good intro into English/Balkan blend ribbon cut tobacco.

FIVE BROTHERS: FIVE BROTHERS 1.25OZ - Excellent straight burley tobacco, on the strong side flavor profile.

ORLIK: GOLDEN SLICED 50G - Excellent intro into Virginia flake tobacco. It’s sweet and grassy, easy to prepare if you want to try flake tobacco.

Don't forget that Balkan Supreme could also be under the Arango name.

Personally as a long time cigar smoker, I have a hard time with the bright Virginias, heavily cased, or topped blends. I prefer Burley based or dark fired forward blends. SLR turned me onto some of the best dark fired tobacco there is, Gawith Hoggarth. Very bold and full flavored for sure, also quite strong.

I think Mike made excellent recommendations, but I would say Prince Albert over Five Brothers for a starter Burley blend. Just IMHO of course

Bipolar, one last thing to consider, if you want to try both flavored and non-flavored pipe tobacco, you will need a dedicated pipe for the flavored tobacco. If you smoke non-flavored tobacco in a pipe you used for flavored tobacco, it will taste like the last flavor you smoked.

10-4. Thanks for the heads up. I'll just have to order another pipe then!
