First impressions - Pipe selection with questions

So it doesn't take long for me to bite.

Anyway I read the primer up top regarding pipe selection. Sitting here at work makes me wish I was at the B&M checking em out. Holding em and what not.
However, from a pure visual impression I really like the looks of Nording pipes found at the Briary. Those rustic two tone pipes look great.
So I got thinking about pipestem shape.
I would imagine that with a straight stem pipe, I would have to tilt my head or that it wouldn't rest easily.
Versus a curved stem pipe. I have no idea what I'm talking about but do you guys know what I mean by this?
What are your impressions of stem shape?
Also, does free hand mean that you can set the pipe down and free up your hand or does it mean hand made? Like free hand drawing?
