Humidity question

I was trying to set up a tupperdor this week using one of those tupperware-like storage containers. I was in a state of delirium over the thought of filling the container with cigars when I bought it, so I failed to notice that the lid had a handle that creates little openings in the top. Anyway, I snapped the lid on and put my new Drymistat stick in there. After a day or so, the humidity wasn't even at 60%. So, I tried putting a little cup of water in the container. Within about an hour, the humidity was up to 80%. When I took the cup of water out, the humidity fell below 60% again very quickly.

Does this mean that the openings in the top of the storage container are too big, and this container can't be used as a tupperdor. It would seem that- assuming my Drymistat stick isn't defective- if I could get the humidity up above 80%, the Drymistat should then keep it around 70%, unless there's some problem with my setup. Is that right? The container isn't very big, about 18" X 8" X 8". Should I abandon this container and just go get a cooler?

Thanks!

EDIT- Yes, I filled the Drymistat stick with water
