Partagas Serie D No. 4 (PTS FEB06 )
PSD4's were one of the first Habanos I ever smoked, and they have had a special place in my rotation ever since. It is my favorite Robusto.
I have smoked from numerous boxes from early '04 through early '06. While all my previous D4's went through a "sick" period between six months and a year or so after boxing, my SEP05 definitely have not. They have remained consistently approachable over the past year, and have even improved somewhat. This suggests to me that there was a blend change sometime between early and late '05, perhaps incorporating more aged filler. However, I would not say that these late '05s are among the better D4's I have smoked, in terms of spice and depth of flavor. On the other hand, the early '06s that I am sampling now are very good. I smoked another one tonight, and was quite pleased. What I find curious is that they have a smoking and flavor profile that is more similar to aged D4's, as distinct from the young ones that I have always enjoyed. That is, they are smoother, exhibit a more mature depth of flavor, and the spices aren't as "sharp" as I would expect from a young D4. And they are plenty strong. Unfortunately, they also lack much of the fresh tobacco sweetness that I have come to associate with young D4's. Still, they are very good, and compare quite favorably to my remaining '04s. In sum, if I were buying a box to smoke now, I'd get the '06s in preference to '05s (unless, of course I could source some '02s or some really vintage D4's). Edit: Since this post, I ordered two boxes of the '06s. Edit: Received boxes, smoked two samples. Topped.
