Bein' a city dog I don't get much chance to her what the country dogs have done for themselves.

Well I'm a wonderin' if you folks could send me in the direction of some "roots" type Bluegrass. You know, that gritty, nasty, backwoods sound that makes city folk quiver in fear.

I have always loved that sound, but haven't had a chance to do my homework and now I would like to take lesson in the finer art of Bluegrass. Old school style.

Whoa, big fella... we don't want to just throw you in like that... what with your citified ears and all.

Check out Lonesome River Band or IIIrd Time Out as a warm up.

Then, once you've begun to adjust, try - Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, and Del McCroury. Hardcore... BTW, Del's popularity has surged lately since it became known that the guy's in Phish are big fans of his.

Definitely Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, Louvin' Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs.

Look for a CD called "Preachin', Prayin' and Singin'" for a "shock course."

My family was raised on this music. After trying the old stuff you can listen to Allison and Ricky Scaggs

I think Del McCourys 'mainstream' success is because of his CD/Tour witrh Steve Earle.
Phish has ZERO to do with Dels recent mainstream success. Robbie McCoury has been mandolin player of the year forever.
Del and the boys are the best going right now.

I think the Mountian CD with Earle is great but not pure BG. I think Scaggs Bluegrass rules is the best I have heard the last few years.

Ralph Stanley and the Cinch Mountain boys is the way to go to meet your needs.

You might also look for the Johnson Mountain Boys. They aren't together anymore but were fabulous while they were.

Frequently missed in these type of discussions is Jimmy Martin, Jim&Jesse, the Osborne brothers, and Mac Wiseman. They all did great traditional bluegrass.

For a more contemporary sound check out the Country Gentleman or the Seldom Scene.

BTW there is no finer music than bluegrass gospel even if you are not particularly religious. Don't overlook that stuff, it is awesome.

Doc Watson wouldn't be considered bluegrass but I never met a bluegrass fan that didn't think he was fabulous.

Listen to KC he's the BG expert on here. I never met a guitar player/musician that didn't think Doc was fabulous.
