Funky smelling beads
I don't know how old these beads are, but over the last month or two I have started noticing a funky smell. More pronounced when I wet them. Almost like citrus. Anyone else notice this?

Never noticed a smell. They are turning yellowish brown over the years though.

They do pull in some moisture from the cedar and the cigars as well. This doesn't affect performance. There's no way (that I know of) to clean them.

Coloring over time? Affirmative.
Funky smell? Negative. I have beads that have been in use for more than 5 years. The only smell they've accumulated in that time is a rather potent cedar aroma that really comes out when I wet them.

Water goes in and out of the beads as it cycles, being reabsorbed from the box. It's gonna carry some stuff with it that will stay in the beads, and it'll discolor them. that's gonna be normal.
An acid smell, to me, indicates some sort of biological contamination that has released some sort of chemical. Looking like it might even have been some sort of lactobacillus that fed on whatever by products went in that darkened the beads, as there would have been traces of sugar in it. toss them into the flower beds, IMO. If it was me, I'd think about letting them dry, saturating them with h2o2, letting them dry out some, and another saturation with distilled. May work, should decontaminate them, but probably not worth the trouble. I'd do it out of curiousity. |

Yes, but more like cedar than anything else.
