Vegas Robaina Petit Robaina

Vegas Robaina Petit Robaina
Edición Regional Canada 2009

Country of Fabrication: Cuba
Packaging: Dress box containing 25 cigars
Number Issued: 1,200 boxes
Dimensions: 52-ring gauge by approximately 4.3 inches
Type of Cigar: Petit Edmundo

Date of Review: Saturday September 11, 2010
Setting: A sunny afternoon relaxing on a friend’s poolside deck.
Accompanying Beverages: High West Rendezvous Rye Whiskey and a glass of water.

Construction: Of a very high standard. Excellent roll density. A well applied triple seam cap.
Combustion/Draw: Perfect draw characteristics. One relight was required well into the session owing to the ambient humidity of the filler leaves. Smooth sailing otherwise.
Ash: Generally naval to bone grey.
Wrapper Leaf: Notably smooth. Medium brown with a faint terracotta cast as well as a few darker markings from oils.

Opening Portion: Surprisingly easy going. An inviting mélange of typically Robaina semi-dry earthiness and gently toasted tobacco along with some uplifted notes of cedar.
Early Stages: A continuation of the opening presentation. Silky palate delivery evidencing a blend of well matured tobaccos. Harmonious.
Mid Portion: The first hints of medium roasted coffee and dark chocolate emerged as the tenor shifted from a rather mild demeanour to a slightly fuller one. Good balance, with delicate herbal sensations providing a cooling freshness that brought the core flavours into even greater relief.
Latter Stages: Fuller still. Complex if slightly restrained. A touch of bitterness near the finish.

Overall: Admittedly not quite as full throttled as expected. A highly nuanced cigar that sacrifices a little of the legendary Vegas Robaina richness and strength for a greater sense of sophistication.

Summary: Here’s a short format Habanos ideally suited to a wide range of cigar aficionados. As approachable and appealing as the Petit Robaina is at this moment, however, further humidor time should allow resolution of the minimal youthful bitterness and positive development of the flavour profile.
