There are significant differences between piano hinges and quadrant hinges. The quadrants can take quite a bit of abuse while still maintaining a very low profile. The low profile means very good sealing characteristics. A piano hinge is quite a bit bulkier and won't take nearly the same amount of abuse. They are also designed to open all the way up which contributes to the abuse on the hinge as it has to support a lid out at 90 degrees where all of the weight bears against the hinge in the most stressful method possible. We use quadrants in everything to limit the range on the lid for stability and longevity and in larger models with heavier lids supplement the quadrants with a piano hinge for added support.
