Ray Price...
Never really listened to him before that I know of. Heard a version of Night Life on Sirius tonight that kicked ass. It's total weirded out bluesy type of stuff that you don't expect of a "country" singer. It's got some kicking guitar and steel guitar work in it. Total blues, soul kind of thing. Not the twang you think of with steel guitar. If anyone wants to hear it, I have a copy, and can mail it to you for your pleasure. I think Mannish and Guitarzan will like this one. BTW, this is the 4 minute version found on a different album than the greatest hits stuff. That's big band sounding. This is totally different.

Ray Price was the MAN in the 60's when it came to that. He carried the 'Nashville Sound' banner in that time, the strings, horns, and such that many of us find nauseating in 'country' music. The 'nashville sound' wasn't country then any more than Martina McBride is country today.
Ray could sing his ass off though.

I've always liked RP. When I was a kid, the old man would put an album on the turntable at bedtime. I slept on a roll-a-way bed in the livingroom so I got to hear every note and every instrument. Whenever I hear a RP tune on the radio, it takes me back to those days. I liked the orchestra in his music.
To me it didn't sound like big band at all. RP's orchestra was mostly strings while big band is mostly horns, to me anyway. YMMV |

I think I'm gonna have to do some more digging. I am really taking a shine to his sound.
