Coffee question

I've always loved the smell of coffee. Always. But I have never been able to drink it because it tastes like hot water with a tiny bit of flavor, either bitter or whatever. I like beverages with substance to them but I even have trouble with hot tea sometimes because there doesn't seem to be any flavor to it. I don't like strong flavors like a powerful black tea so much, I just wish I knew what I was doing with the whole coffee/tea thing.

What am I missing???
