Hygrometer Question

Ok, here's the deal.

All three hygromoters in question have been Western Caliber II.

First one was bought with my desktop unit and I got it to read about 68% using a cigar oasis jr. I bought my buddy one as a gift and threw it into my humidor before giving it to him and it read 5% lower than my original one. My new Antietam came today and the new hygrometer is also reading 5% lower than my original while having both of them side by side in my desktop 'dor. So my questions are:

1. Do I assume my original is reading 5% high since 2 others seem to confirm this?
2. Or do I perform a salt test on the new one since I have my original in case it screws up the other?

If you chose the salt test, could someone condense the steps? Place hygrometer along with a capful of moistened salt in a baggie for how long?

Thanks!
David

I used to go nuts trying to get all my hygrometers to read 70/70. Then one day a wise man told me not to stress over them. Get your cigars to the point of smokability you like, ie: not too moist, not too dry. When you have that, check the hygrometer and note the reading. That is where your cabinet should be. Use the rh number as a guide. If it drops more than 5 points or climes more than 5 points, adjust as needed. It is only cigars, not rocket science.

Well, I'm 2 hours into a salt test and the new hygrometer is reading 71% so maybe I got lucky and the original one was right on...we'll see what the morning brings.

Thanks for the advice!

Suggest salt test on all three at once, same container. Note discrepancies on each. Then relax and avoid extremes.

Good advice. That's what I did and my hygrometer OCD disappeared right away.

The new one ended at 73% after the test which means the original was reading 3% high.

I stuck with my original as the one I am using and have it ready steady at 68%...which in turn means it is truly at the 65% I was shooting for.

Thanks for the help!

I hate to burst your bubble DWavs, but the salt test should give a 75% RH reading. This would indicate that your new one is reading 2% low, not 3% high as you indicated...
