I believe he is still under contract to the Sox, at least for a year. You cannot retire out of a contract then re-contract elsewhere. I don't think the Sox waived him.
And apparently the kid in the clubhouse was a handshake deal, not written into the contract. If that is true, then there is not much to go on as far as having what you want. Kenny Williams is not the most beloved exec in baseball, he made some odd moves as GM. But he he had the right to lower the days in the clubhouse. LaRoche has the right to retire.
