I used to make cigar band ashtrays for CCC all the time, but I didn't mess with any resin. I took a clear ashtray and just used regular Elmer's glue to glue them to the bottom and sides of the ashtray. (I found Elmer's to dry the clearest without wrinkling the bands - you just have to paint it on lightly.)
After they dried I'd paint or spray them all with a nice strong varnish, then glue felt around and under them. They turned out beautiful. I'll see if I can find some pics.
