Kauai Kahuna
Based on Francis' recommendation (and Russ' write-up), I popped for a few pounds of the Kauai Kahuna from CBC when I ordered my AeroPress a couple of weeks ago. Not too many island coffees impress me, but this one does.
I've tried a couple of different roasts with it, but what seems to work best is City+, with 36-48 hours of rest time. In the AeroPress, especially at full (espresso) strength, this coffee is smooth and clean, with a distinct carmel flavor to it. I also get some floral notes and faint hints of a chalky earthiness, but nothing unpleasant at all. One interesting observation: this bean is much lighter in color for a given roast level than any other bean I've ever roasted. The color at the very onset of second crack is more like a City or City+ than a Full City, so you can't rely on color alone to gauge your roast. In all, I like this better than the last batch of Kauai Na La'au Lea that I had, and it's certainly a bargain when compared to a typical Kona. Thanks for the heads-up, Francis!
