There are several musicians working in jazz that always sound fresh. Bird is amongst them. You hear "Bird with Strings" and you hear an understanding of 2 genres that is stunning. And if you can ever get a chance to listen to any of the stuff recorded live off the radio (not the best reecordings because of the limits of wire recorders in the 40s) when he played on "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid" you can be doubley amzed that he apparently was always experimenting. One of those recordings caught him off key for a few bars on the JWSS theme, then he hits the right key and takes off.
Hard to say what he and some others would have done if they lived longer. But he certainly made the song "Laura" his own personal statement.
