Smoke Nazis at it again in Mississippi

quote:
"Mississippi health officials are hoping the second time is the charm, seeking again to pass a state law that would make public places and workplaces smoke-free."

I just think it's crossing a line, that can never be uncrossed. If the govt can tell a privately owned business they can't allow smoking, you can be sure, that is only the first step.

I have always believe in let the business owner decide, and his customers would determine if the establishment was smoke free..or smoke friendly.

I agree but it's happening all over the place. Michigan went public-smoke-free last year (two years ago?) and Florida is the same according to a friend of mine that lives there. It's ridiculous but it has enough support.

Personally..I don't like to smell smoke..of any kind while I'm eating. But I think it should be up to the business owner.
I remember eating at a buffett style place in Mobile a few years ago..(Sadies?)
They had a smoking room, but you honestly could not smell a trace of smoke outside of the room.
Place was packed.

If a business owner goes smoke free, then I'm ok with that. If he wants to allow smoking, I have a choice to eat elsewhere.

But he still has a choice, and so do I. The economics will decide it for him, as it should be, not the govt.

The worst part is they are using stimulis money to do this. They recieved a 2.9 million grant to push smoke-free laws. They are using your money lobby against your rights.

St Louis County recieved 7.6 million to do the same. They have no idea what to do with the money. For over a month they blizted the radio with ads directing people to a website to take action. The website they directed people had no such information and hadn't been updated in months. I was happy that it didn't hurt us, but they spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars for nothing.

That's because the vast majority of us here have common sense.

If smoking is a problem for diners, then the problem will take care of it's self.
No one I know of opens a business to lose money. If smoking hurts their biz, they will become no smoking.
Conversely, if they do more business with a smoking section...they should have that choice too.

It's really not complicated at all, and in fact, I expect most dining establishments would probably go no smoking anyway. And I can respect that, as long is it was their decision, and not the govts.

Interesting in the article, one of the biggest opponents (MS House representative) says he hates smoking. His grandfather died from emphysema, but he still believes it should be the private business owner's choice, and not that of the govt.

One more point.

I don't smoke inside my house. However it's MY choice not to do so. You can be sure, if the govt intrudes into private business, your home will not be far behind. There have already been bills about not allowing smoking in cars, with children present. From there..it will be no smoking in cars.

It is good that the government takes the words to a terrific Gershwin song so literally: "Someone to Watch Over Me."

So they passed a law you can't smoke in NYC's Central Park, but I see people smoking weed there all the time.
