New Humidor
I ordered a small, inexpensive humidor from Cuban Crafters (sorry, Dave, you didn't have exactly what I was looking for), and it just arrived. I wet the humidifier element with 50/50 solution and put a small dish of solution in the humidor to start getting it ready. I figured it would take probably a week or more, especially in the forced hot air environment of my office. I stuck my digital hygro in it, just so it would be there when I was ready to check. Of course, being curious (not to mention impatient), I took a look about an hour later. The damned thing was reading 70% RH!
Could it be that the humidor arrived already "seasoned" and ready to go? Is there any reason to wait before removing the dish of solution and sticking my cigars in there?

I would try adding just a few cigars at a time, maybe a fiver every other day or so. Keep a close eye on the RH, as long as it stays stable, everything should be okay.

Local shop has a big walk in and keeps the humidors inside of it. If i bought a humidor there, it would be ready to roll.
Could be Crafters stores theirs the same way, but without knowing for sure... i'd leave the water inside the box overnight anyways. After 24hrs i'd then load it full and keep an eye on it. |

It also depends on what your checking with. I bought a humidor a few months ago and seasoned it. My analog hygrometer always showed it between 67% and 70%. I bought a digital one and it showed me at 58%. I had always thought my smokes were a little dry. I then bought the beads and bam - right at 65% and holding. If it's small a day or two should work just fine to get it seasoned.

I highly doubt they have their humidors in the same room as their humidification system. They probably have them stored in a warehouse and the humidor is in a polybag with styrofoam in a cardboard box. They are located in Miami, like me, so the humidity here is high. Many people get their humidors and they already read 70%, but I tell them all the same thing. Still set it up the correct way, calibrate the hygrometer, and give it at least a week. Patience is key and king. It isn't so much as a false positive reading, as much as the humidor not being subjected to the proper humidity to "break it in" correctly. It is better to be safe than sorry. Besides that thing had to ship from Florida to where-ever you are located, and if you are in the northern states it is pretty cold and dry up there. Just my $.02 worth.
