If you like BVSC - you'll like ____?
Being a lover of BVSC , Im wondering if there are other Cuban or Spanish type sounds out there which are similar new or old. I know they are a unique sound but you people that are fans of BVSC- what else do you listen to in the same style ?(off topic but I also like the Marley type stuff.)

Afro-Cuban All Stars have a similar sound to BVSC since many of the old-timers from BVSC are featured. Snowboy and Cachao are more along the lines of Cuban Jazz.
Check out: 1. Eliades Ochoa ("Tribute to Cuarteto Patria" and "Sublime Illusion") 2. Compay Segundo ("Calle Salud" is very good) 3. Beny More (too many to list, however, get remastered copies as originals are "scratchy") Enjoy.

Check out the Estrellas de Areito. Old 'group' of the recording label's (Areito) stars, and IMHO, as compelling and exciting as BVSC!
"Estrellas de Areito was a state-sponsored all-star session recorded in 1979, and in a sense, the project was the Buena Vista Social Club of its time. In fact, the disc features several of the players who would be so praised an impressive 20 years later, notably pianist Gonzalez (again) and singer Teresa Garcia Caturla, who duets with Ferrer on his album. The hybrid son rhythms captured on these two discs are amazing..."

How 'bout Los Van Van?
Also, many of the BVSC artists have solo recordings well worth obtaining, including: Omara Portuondo Compay Segundo Ibrahim Ferrir Barbarito Torres Hard to find artists, but worth looking for include: Grupo Changui de Guantanamo El Diamante del son y su Grupo La Familia Valeria And definitely go find a copy of Maraca's self titled release, per Las Villas!
