Daily Smokes Mini Reviews 2019

Time to start a thread for the New Year!

I wish I could open with a better cigar, but it's 15 degrees today so I went to the Winter humidor for a couple Honduran Bench Made Corojos from JR's. These come in bundles of 50 wrapped in newspapers. I smoked a CG in the morning and just finished a robusto. These burn well, taste good, and at $1.50 or so apiece are a good value. I originally thought that if it was really cold and uncomfortable I could pitch one of these. But I always stick with them because they are pretty tasty!

JR's Nicaraguan Factory Overrun Churchill today. I am working through the last half of a bundle of 20 of these. They are pretty well made, the burn is decent. But the flavor is a tad on the bitter side. I'm smoking them and they don't suck. But I won't buy more of them.

Yesterday I smoked a Charlie Torano Captiva Churchill. 7 x 48, nice dark wrapper, good even burn with a pleasant chocolatey flavor. This cigar is a winner for me.

Mombacho Mombachito. 4x28 long leaf hand-rolled greatness.

It's still cold here. But yesterday I decided to smoke a Torano Vault (silver label) CG. What a strong and tasty chocolate stick! Great cigar!

I have smoked up all of my Honduran Bench Made Corojos. I'll probably buy more this summer. I smoked 100 of them (50 CGs and 50 robustos.) and they are uniformly good. Not great, but a good smoke for the pittance they cost.

Now I have a Winter humidor full of EP Carillo Overruns. I bought 80 of these from JR's in a BOGO a few months ago. 20 churchills and 60 robustos. I am finding with overrun cigars that the shorter cigars seem to out perform the longer. The churchills have been hit and miss. But even the misses are really okay. But the robustos are all firm, earthy cylinders of toasty goodness. I am surprised by how good they taste and how long they smoke. JR's had another BOGO on these a few days ago and I missed it. I will be watching for another so I can grab another 100 of the robustos.

The weather is finally warming up! I'll be smoking from my regular humidors soon.

Last night's offering, a gift--of course-- from Stogie5150's Uncle Lawrence, was a Havana Club-HC Series Black Maduro toro. I had not had a Havana Club in a very long time, perhaps 9 or 10 years when they were first introduced as a collaboration between Xikar and Jesus Fuego. This was an eminently smokable cigar, I enjoyed a great deal.

These are Honduran-made with a Connecticut-grown, Havana Oscuro maduro wrapper, Nicaraguan and Dominican filler. Catalogs and what-have-you list them on the medium side of strong, which I found on the initial draw each time, but the smoke was not that bad once the draw settled in my mouth before I exhaled.

This is a CW gem, a really good cigar at a very nice price.
Solid three asterisks and a bit. ***

I had what I think was a Perdomo Mistake maduro belicoso. I had trouble keeping it lit, drawing on it. Perhaps I should have clipped it a second time, but I thought I felt a stem or a blockage just behind the foot. I struggled to get it lit, I struggled to keep it lit, even after I broke up whatever the occlusion was. Cigar was still a bit soft and I fought it to just about half way and gave up the ghost.

It is understandable as this is not their main line, or even a signature line of theirs, then it's inexpensive through CI. I have smoked these before and will enjoy the next one. It could have been exacerbated by the not exactly perfect storage situation living with the old one, and I am not assiduous in maintaining my humidors as others are. All factors played into this.

Little is more frustrating than a poorly behaved cigar.
