The diagrammed "popper in a box" technique has you leaving the chute on the top of the popper. If you do that, how do you keep the chute from melting? That's the fundamental reason I went to oil lamp chimneys - they don't melt.

That would be an issue. My popper was generously gifted to me and didnt have a cover to melt. I have melted the canning funnel I use as a top after my lamp chimney rolled off the table and broke. I need to get another one, they worked well.

I tilt the box on it's side, set the popper in, and use the box flaps to divert heat back into the box. Thataway I can sorta control the heat.
