Why No NC Box Codes/Dates?

It appears to me that many of the top non-cuban cigar makers brag about their cuban heritage (and probably rightfully so), but how come when they started making cigars in DR, Hondurus or wherever they didn't utilize the box code/dating tradition of cuban cigars?
Wouldn't the consumer be served in the same manner by box codes/dates on NCs as are on cubans? Since NCs appear to be aged much longer before shipping than Cuban's, wouldn't it inure to the makers benefit to use a box code/date?
Anybody know the answer to this, or at least have a working theory?
