Starter Pipe

What is a good starter pipe? I've been thinking about getting a pipe for some time now. Any suggestions? Thanks

If you use Tapatalk, be careful if you swipe down. You will lose whatever you typed up. I had a really good post on this but lost it all. Just a word of warning if you use Tapatalk. I’ll post about this later.

Here is a basic pipe shape chart. My personal favorites are the Billiard, Bulldog, Poker and Rhodesian (circled in red). I also like a straight stem since it is the easiest to keep clean since you can run a pipe cleaner through the entire pipe without having to remove the stem.

Reason I like these 4 basic shapes are the bowls are medium size, and lends itself to both shag tobacco and flake tobacco. Too small a bowl means you will be refilling the pipe more often and too big a bowl will require long amounts of time to finish a bowl. Flake tobacco is my favorite type of tobacco. Flakes smoke best in a medium size bowl pipe.

Figure out what shapes you like and we will go from there.

I highly suggest a corn cob pipe to start your new hobby. If you decide it's not for you then you're not out much. Welcome to the Darkside!

I agree. You can't go wrong with a corn cob pipe. For around $10 you'll get a pipe that you can use to try a variety of tobacco's and see if you enjoy pipe smoking. If you do, you may want to stick with corn cob pipes, or you may want to buy something that's a little prettier. In all honesty, corn cob pipes are really hard to beat. Some people will stick with them for the rest of their lives. Others want something a little more exotic and there's no doubt that some of the other types of pipes, such as briars, have some advantages. But when you are just starting out, and you don't know whether you'll even enjoy pipe smoking, you can't beat a corn cob.

Starter Pipe

Corn cobs definitely make good starter pipes since the prices are so low compared to briar. They also smoke well. My favorites are made by Missouri Meerschaum. Here’s a link to their non-filtered collection.

The Carolina Gent and the Dagnar Poker are two of my faves. They cost more but the build quality is tops.

Another recommendation for Missouri Meerschaum, made in Washington, Missouri.

Ditto on the above comments regarding cobs. Inexpensive, user-friendly and frankly, they smoke really well. A few tips also as you are starting the pipe journey: Pack lightly and smoke slowly. Enjoy!
