Have never tried any of the JR Alternates, or seen much discussion of them.

How are they?

Do they really taste like the cigar they are supposed to be mimicking, or different, but good cigars?

Thanks

I don’t think they taste like the cigars they claim they taste like. I do find these cigars to be a decent cigar for the price. I enjoy them.

I always joked that the name meant that they were an alternative to a cigar.

They're factory seconds. I've smoked quite a few over the last 20 years. Are they perfect? Hardly. Are they a good value? Absolutely. They're cheap enough that you aren't risking much to try them.

Yes, I tried a lot of them in my early cigar journey. In hindsight, one of my dad's sayings often comes to mind, "if it sounds to be to good to be true it probably is..."
But hey, enjoy what you smoke, that is what matters.

30 years or so ago Alts were the real McCoy. They were mostly rolled in the same factories as their namesakes with maybe not quite as good tobacco. ( sometimes with the same tobacco. Fuente made Fuente etc. You can read all about them in the old JR catalogs. Lew may have been the greatest BS'er in cigar history, but his stories about many things including the history of Alts were absolutely true. They were not seconds, they were deliberately made as alternates. Then came the mid-90's and the boom and things started changing. Today, G-d only knows who makes them or what their story is. When they came out until the early 20's, they were the best buy in the market. (Except some Connies)

Also, if I remember correctly, Lew claimed they were the number one selling brand of hand-rolled cigars in the U.S. back then.
