French press coffee woes

So I've had a French press setup for a good while and can sometimes make decent enough coffee with it. Other times, the coffee is muddy looking. Any tips on how to avoid the mud? Seriously considering ditching the whole deal and getting an old school Mr. Coffee drip setup...

I always considered it to be a result of overgrinding the beans and just part of the process.

What he said. You need a really coarse grind for a french press.

And a good grinder. Setting a shitty grinder to coarse just makes the big bits bigger. You still get the powdery fines that make coffee muddy.

This.
A burr grinder is the only way to go.
once the pieces crack to the set size they drop out. you get a tiny fraction of the 'powder' that you do from a chopper...

Bipolar, how are you grinding your coffee beans?

As others have said here, a good conical burr grinder will give consistent good FP coffee.

I love FP coffee. Here’s my go to rig that works well for me since I only drink a few cups of coffee at a time, and not every day.

I use a manual grinder and a stainless steel FP. It took a lot of trial and error to get the right course grind for me but I got it dialed in and I will not change it. So this manual grinder is used only for my FP coffee. It gives me a fairly clean and tasty cup.

Check this one out from Amazon…

My friend uses a Capresso conical burr grinder that works great. Check it out.

Thanks for all the responses fellas. I’m using a standard blade type grinder, and suspected that it was the problem. I get super fine grounds and more course grounds at the same with it. Gonna order a conical burr grinder and see if that helps.

It should definitely help. And I’ll just tell you, there’s no going back to a drip long term after you’ve gone to a press. You’ll never enjoy your coffee again.

The Capresso above is a great entry level burr grinder, does a pretty good job of keeping the grind even. It will make ALL the difference, save the blade grinder to grind up spices....you will be MUCH happier.
