I bought some silica beads (Exquisicat Pearl Fresh) and would like to pre-set their RH set point to 63 %. I’ve read some recent threads about how to accomplish this, but some of them seem to conflict with each other on various points. So I would like to ask a few questions of those who have done this before giving it a shot myself.
Firstly, is it better to use pure water (in florist foam) rather than a 50/50 PG solution as a humidification element when pre-setting the beads? I would think both would accomplish the same task, but the PG solution may do it more slowly. Which is better – faster or slower? Is there a problem with using PG solution? Secondly, once the RH in the container reaches the desired level, I believe I am supposed to remove the humidification element (water or PG solution). At that point should I leave the beads in the container for a while to stabilize them before using, or should I begin using them right away? If the former, how long should they be left to stabilize? Should water be added at this point, or should I wait until I put them in my humidor? Thirdly, once the RH has been set and I am ready to begin using the beads, how much water should I use to “charge” the beads prior to placing them in the humidor with my cigars? Anything else I need to know about this process? Finally, once the beads have been pre-set to a given RH, is there anything I should NOT do to avoid re-setting the RH by mistake (or is that even possible?)? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer, and I apologize if this is a dead horse that has already been thoroughly beaten. PS – when I bought my silica beads I noticed that they come in two forms – round (beads) or crystals (odd shapes). The crystals are slightly larger than the beads. Is there any advantage to using one over the other? Thanks again!
