Time for the designated sneezer

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa is expected to be officially placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a lower back sprain sustained while sneezing.

Sosa suffered the injury shortly after entering the Cubs' clubhouse at Petco Park on Sunday prior to his team's 4-2 win over San Diego. After sneezing, he grabbed a chair for support. During the game, he received treatment in the training room.

Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry made the announcement prior to Tuesday's game against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field. Earlier in the day, Sosa underwent an MRI, which revealed a sprained ligament but more importantly did not show any disc damage.

"It's pretty certain he'll miss a couple of weeks," Hendry said. "It'll be five to seven days before he can begin rehab."

Sosa homered in the initial two games against the Padres. He smacked his 549th career homer Saturday to move past Mike Schmidt into ninth place on the all- time list.

In 35 games this season, Sosa is batting .291 with 10 homers and 24 RBI.
