DPG cigars....Like em or not?

After seeing and reading a recent thread on the DPG Series JJ and the quoted posts below, I got to thinking about the many different DPG lines that he either produces himself or that he blends for others. Also of those cigars the shear number that I have enjoyed over the years and still do enjoy.

There has been so much discussion and praise for several of the new cigars and the people behind them the last few years, Pete Johnson (Tatuaje) and Dion Giolito (Illusione) to name a couple, that the banter concerning Don Pepin and his wonderful blends has seemed to have not been the the buzz it once was. But after thinking about it, I have a reaffirmed that I am still the DPG whore that I have always been. It is true that he has his efforts spread across many different cigars and there are still several blends that I have never had the opportunity to sample. But there are are several others that I truly enjoy.

Just to list the ones I still currently really enjoy.......

Cuban Classic
DPG Blue
Serie JJ
Vegas Cubanas (time has been good to these)
Tobacos Baez
Cubao
Old Henry
San Cristobal
601 Black (shame these are gone)
601 Blue
Mi Barrio
Little Havan Overuns
Hirsh Y Garcia
Habana Leon
Havana Soul

The Padilla Miami 8/11 and Signature 1932 that were originally blend by Pepin were absolutely exquisite. Oh how I wish there were to be an unknown stash of these discovered!

I never have tried the My Father or the El Centurion, mainly just because these were to rich for my blood. I've heard lots of people rave about them but just never could convince myself to drop the coin on them.

So what are your thoughts on Don Pepin's many different cigars and blends? Still like some, many, not so many? Dicovered some over the years that you really like? Found age refined some that turned some into to favorites that you have since started stocking and putting down to rest?

Just curious what the thoughts were from the CW community concerning Don Pepin's many lines.

Discuss!

There's my take on the ones I've tried. I don't like it when a manufacturer puts out a million different lines, it just complicates things and usually lowers quality.

How do you figure Dion is behind DPG?

I didn't mean that Dion was behind DPG. What I was saying was that when DPG first hit the scene with his first cigars he was all the talk and was all the talk for quite some time on several boards. After Illusione and Tatuaje hit the scene they kind of took over the discussion scene and volume of discussion concerning DPG kind of faded from the scene. That will happen everytime something new and great hits the market.

Big Ben's post and the thread that followed just got me to thinking. I love me some Tats and Illusiones, but I also still really enjoy several of the cigars that DPG has made or been involved with!

When Cubao first came out I was all over them but now not so much...don't know if it was me or the production. I just don't care for them much anymore.

Cuban Classic - Love 'em.
DPG Blue - My first DPG ever, still a top-drawer favorite.
Serie JJ - Love 'em.
Vegas Cubanas - The first DPG I ever had that elicited a "meh."
Tobacos Baez - Love 'em.
Cubao - Love 'em.
Old Henry - Love 'em, have a metric pantload in my stash.
San Cristobal - Absolutely love the Guajiros.
601 Green - Good, but strong
Little Havana Overruns - Love 'em, great value smokes
My Father - Lanceros are OK, but the jury's still out on this one. Pretty steep on price...
El Centurion - Not impressed, especially for the $$$

Other brands that Don Pepin has/had a hand in:

Tatuaje Brown Band - Epic.
The original Padilla Signature 1932 blend - Holy crap, what a spectacular cigar line this was!
5 Vegas Miami - Love 'em

I'm sure I'm missing some, but the picture is clear: I count myself as a proud DPG Whore.

I thought Tatuaje's popularity is what shined the light on Don Pepin? Meaning--they "predated" him, not "eclipsed" him.

The Black labels (Cuban Classics?) in thin ring gauges and the Tat. blends are my favorites. The Blues are a good value, especially if you get them on C-bid. The Jaimie Garcias toros always pushed my buttons.

I seem to prefer the ones he makes for other people:

tatuaje (both brown and red)
eo 601 red

Personally, I preferred the old La Aroma de Cuba cigars over DPG's new blend.... Oh and the price went up....

Anyway, to each his own, but those 2 brands I named are in my top 5 of NC's.....
