Are these things pre-programmed with self destruct timers?

My family is nuts over them. They seem to break down after about a year. My brother in law somehow got a spare one at no cost, and gave it to us. It hasn't made it an entire year, and now it's not quite right.

Is this a common thing, for them to break down or self destruct in about the time it takes to break in a pair of new shoes?

I've not taken the necessary time to research all the trouble shooting, because it's doing so many distinctly odd things that I don't know where to start.

It really wasn't so bad, cost wise, because we were using very small cups, and we'd just split a run from a pod every morning, and some days go through 3 or 4 pods. Having access to a good cup of coffee in the morning by just walking 10 steps and pushing some buttons was worth it. There are serious disadvantages to owning a huge two story home. The ten minute walk from the bedroom to the coffee maker is one of them.
