Paging Gui_Tarzan or other electric guitarists...
The boy (now 16) wants an electric guitar for Christmas. I'm back in Germany and really don't want to buy locally, so I'm pretty much stuck with www.musiciansfriend.com or something similar that ships to APO's.
Could you give recommendations for a guitar / amp combo? Not sure whether to go Les Paul, Strat or Tele style (I explained the differences to him and he's checking out comparisons on youtube. I'm well versed on acoustics, but not up to date on electrics (i.e.: where made, which is the best price/performance, etc...) - He already plays, and has a Larrivee OM and a cheap Yamaha classical - Amp needs a headphone jack (1/4 or 1/8)... - An amp with built in effects (i.e.: Fender Mustang) is better right now than a tube amp and pedals... - Would rather spend the majority on the guitar... around $100-200 on the amp. - He listens to everything from Led Zeppelin to Ted Nugent to Jack White to whatever those whippersnappers listen to today (Chevelle, Linkin Park, etc...) - Looking to keep the whole package under $750 (less expensive is always better, but I'll also go up to $1k) Thanks in advance!!!!

This forum gets less visits than I thought...
I ended up ordering him a Korean-made PRS....

Guitarists are a dime a dozen. Bassists are more in demand.

RD,
That looks like a better than average Starter electric. What kind of amp did You select? I have a 30 watt Peavey Viper modeling amp with tons of features, it is very versatile and plenty of headroom built right in for around $200. cheers! slack

Sorry RD! I don't come in here very often, I actually clicked on it by mistake! LOL!
That looks like a good one, much better than the Fender Squire or Yamaha starters. As far as starter amps go, I can't be of much help there I'm afraid. I actually play bass far more often than a 6-string but when I look at guitars I look at just the mid-range stuff. I haven't looked at a starter amp in years. My guitar amps consist of a Fender 112 and a Vox VT20 modeling amp. It has a preamp tube and solid state effects and output. For a solid clean tone you can't beat Fender, for dirty you can't beat an all-tube 20-30 watt name brand (Vox, Peavey, Fender, etc.) but they're pricey.

I ended up not getting him an amp. I got an adapter so he can plug it into his Mac. GarageBand can apply effects to replicate many different amps and stomp boxes, and he can play through headphones...

Killer first electric! I play quite a bit (going on 14 years now - I do music for a living now)
I'm always willing to help if you have questions! |
