So I had an epiphany today

I moved my 100 count humi to the rec. room in the basement as the weather started to warm up. It's been sitting on top of an old Hanson's ice box I bought at auction years ago.

I looked at the ice box today and thought; this would make a neat humidor. I know it will take a little work, but I like a challenge. I just have to figure out if I should take the old tin lining out or just go over top of it with Spanish cedar. either way I will line it with cedar.

It seems like a great winter project when I get all my tools home.

As anyone tried a similar project?

Do a search under cedar chest, there are more.

Very nice, thanks Headbanger.

Mines a smaller version made of wood. single front door and a lid on top where they would load the block of ice. That one looks great though.

As most fridges are air tight, that is half the battle with converting them into humidors. Keeping the RH steady is the second half of the preparation part. Using cedar to line with might be redundant if you already have multiple boxes. If you do not have many full boxes ro not too many or singles to take up the dead space, empty all wooden boxes or SLB boxes do the trick very well and add some nice cedar aroma.

Best of luck in the conversion.

It might be nice to keep the tin lining to maintain the original "feel" of the ice box, but build some cedar trays or shelves to help with the RH.

I don't think this one is too air tight after 100 years. I don't have any boxes yet, but hope to have some by the time it's done.

I think leaving the tin in, is a good idea and just add some cedar shelves/dividers.

I tried an epiphany the other day. Wasn't that impressed.

Good luck on your icebox project!
