I want to convert a corner cabinet into my dream humidor. Is there a web site that has the instructions, materials, etc..etc. I want to know what I need to seal with, where to get the Spanish ceder and humidifier systems to do this. I was also thinking abouot an old icebox since the seals are already there. Any help would be appreciated.

This is my first post here and I think this is a great forum. Keep it up guys and gals.

Hi Wookie,

Welcome to CW! I've been shopping for Spanish cedar too and found this place on the net:

http://shop.woodcraft.com
3/16" x 4" x 24" for $3.99 each (other sizes available)
Add $7.75 shipping for orders between $20 and $40

I've also heard that Shutte Lumber on Southwest BLVD may have some.

BTW, it looks like we are neighbors (Shawnee, KS), so let me know if you want to go shopping (or herfing)!

wookie98,
check your yellow pages for hardwood lumber suppliers & you may find someone local who stocks spanish cedar. There are a number of internet based sources like woodcraft.com, www.hibdonhardwoods.com, etc.

There are no hard & fast rules on how to do conversions--the approach varies with each piece. My personal preference is to use honduran mahogany sheet goods to line the cabinet & spanish cedar for shelves, trays, & trimout. The mahogany is neutral in aroma & the cedar when combined with boxes gives plenty of the spanish cedar aroma.

The advantage of using mahogany sheet goods for the lining, is to avoid expansion/contraction issues, which are important in a conversion. If you affix a liner that expands at one rate to a cabinet wall expanding at a different rate, one of them is going to "lose".

If you do choose to use solid cedar, you can press fit the panels & allow them to "float".

Re humidification: just make sure to size the system to the cabinet volume. It can range from inexpensive passive to fairly sophisticated digital active systems depending on your overall budget& desired maintenance frequency.

Have fun with the conversion!!

Cheers,

Bob Staebell

Chewie, you got great advice from the master.

If you are interested in an old icebox, look in the members section and e-mail Cedarman. He's a charter member here, and he has converted old 1920's era ice boxes and they are just exquisite. He has tried to sell one before, but I don't know if he ever got a deal for one.

Good fortune to you, and I'd listen to Bob Staebell whenever he speaks.
