How much are we talking? A pound of beads, which can humidify a 5 cubic foot cabinet, is a one time investment of around $35, including shipping. Plus, a couple bucks a year for distilled water. The boveda packs indicate they are only good for three months. Maybe that's an understatement. But how many packs would you need to equal a pound of beads. And, even assuming the boveda packs will last a year, they would all need to be replaced yearly. I can't imagine that it would be cheaper than beads. Simpler, maybe, but not cheaper.
I personally see the boveda packs as the perfect item for a small travel humidor. But not for mass storage, like a cooler or cabinet.

See my post earlier regarding 600 cigars in one enclosure --- $87 and change per year --- that's if you buy the "subscription". Some have said that you can get more than 3 months out of the packs --- well, that may be true but then you're back to monitoring the RH to determine when to replace --- what's the difference between that and monitoring and watering beads? Cost --- distilled water is pretty damn cheap.....
......beads seems simplest for my needs.
